As you can see, still no 'pot'. I'm patient with this one. For those who don't know the history, I got this one in april 2012, from someone's +20yo hedge. Not much more than the trunk and a few big roots were left back then.

crataegushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14277843763632061387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8868585960143612739.post-67092007599409629742023-01-17T05:59:00.002-08:002023-01-17T05:59:29.062-08:00Little sycamore maple (acer pseudoplatanus)
17.01.2023

The little sycamore maple on lavarock. Spores from fungi will settle automatically by spreading through the wind (unbelievably tiny spores), if not brought in actively by repotting whilst recuperating a small amount of the old soil around the roots. Also make sure to use substrates that, by their structure and inherent characteristics, can be colonised with bacteria and fungi, so do not include things like plain gravel.

I've even had fungi in 100% zeolite substrate, with Birch (that has several mycorrhizae they form symbioses with).

These are recent pictures from my European hornbeam (carpinus betulus).

crataegushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14277843763632061387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8868585960143612739.post-28010174731740346092020-04-03T09:25:00.002-07:002020-04-03T09:25:11.661-07:00Wych Elm with threadgraftEarly spring appearing in one of my 2 small Wych Elm projects that I started up from raw material in april 2019.

I made a threadgraft last year in late spring/early summer so this year will be deciding. I expect I will be able to cut off the donor branch somewhere in mid to late summer. We'll see.

Yup, another 10-year project. I'll stop starting those up in 10years or so but for now that still makes me happy.
This tiny thing (about 25cm) is one of my very first bonsai attempst, from a harvested seedling back in 1996 or 1997 I think. It was never grown in the ground pot potted up, like a true beginner.

It is what it is, hardly any wiring, always by pruning, and pruning some more because Rowan does need a bit more drastic pruning if you want more than a few straight branches that go straight up like a rocket.
Seedling 2008, chopped and potted up in 2011 and starting regrowing and training.

Many years ago, someone on IBCforum was persistant in the fact that birch don't last longer than 8 years in pot. Well, I can stop praying now? :-)
Yes, offcourse a bonsai needs works, even when it's 'done' there will come a time you need to start over a bit, rethink, redesign... especially with broadleaved native trees.
you could also call this is a project, still many years ahead before it will look more naturalistic, the goal is a broader wavy canopy, somewhat like a hazel bush on top of a hill/rock/high ground beside a road.
Another 2 to 3 to go.
This alder (alnus glutinosa) was dug out several years ago on grounds that where to be transformed in a parking lot for the nearby warehouse.
These are just fun, little and honest projects.
I can play with inclination later, it could reveal a special look.
Just another update, fall 2019. Definitely needs repotting in late winter. Always make sure not to repot too late, with birch, especially if you're allready started ramification. Sapstream comes very soon with this one.
Its quite small size. Chopped it down, cut almost everything, repotted it, so only next year vigour will start to come back.
You can see a threadgraft as well, I'll leave in on until at least midsummer next year and will only remove it when I'm sure.

Wired a top branch into position, to see what could come out of that next year. I think the top will benefit from it, it'll bring more balance and a bit more green to the front.
No weak branches. All goes well.
Wait another 2 or 3 years, and this tree will develop to one of the better ones in my collection of native bonsai trees. Well, I hope so ;-).

VETERANTREE - style ??? Anyone wanting to pick that up, be my guest but share the link to my blog in that case ;-). "Veteran tree" is a name that allready exists (google it) but would be new to bonsai. According to me, it could appeal to european bonsai enthousiasts. It is by definition a naturalistic style and the term is allready being used.
Has only really woken up 1 week ago. Building it up since 2014, harvestd in april of that year alongside the driveway of someone's holiday home in the Belgian Ardennes, Walloon part of Belgium.

Winterflowering cherry. Very small size. From very young nursery material, aged about 20years now. Has only spent 1 or 2 years in the ground.

Amongst the smallest and oldest bonsai I've grown from tiny seedling. Moved 2 times, since I harvested it in a hedgerow where I lived with my parents... special place in my heart even though there is no drama at all in this tree(let) and it was never ever grown in the ground.
