European Hornbeam out of winter storage 07.03.2015

Today I opened up my improvised winter storage, which is just some pallets covered with reinforced plastic. I took out several trees amongst which this one.

So, the approach graft roots from 2 years earlier have semi-grafted, but not at all up to my taste. Needs lots of work still, or perhaps new grafts with seedlings in stead of 2 to 3yo plants. The edges of the carving done last year have receded here and there because of indrought, nothing bad, still good. The dead wood top I broke off in bits, just roughly. Finishing of all the dead wood is not going to happen until it has weatherd still more. The top I will have to make sure to protect it a little better, it tends to burst and crack too rapidly and I need a good base to be able to finish it off later.
I included a virtual, made with a very basic and free imaging programme. The angle of inclination is set from the programme, It is the closest I could get to what could be an option.

A fun project, and ready for spring. All this from a 'hedge-a-dori' in 2012. The hedge was about 20 years old.

Publication in 'Bonsai', magazine of the Flemish Bonsai Association

As previously mentioned, I am happy to announce publication of the first part of my article "Mycorrhizae, een natuurlijke boost voor uw bomen" (dutch) in 'Bonsai', the magazine of the Flemish Bonsai Association. A read about the existence, use, and horticultural aspects of myccorhizae fungi in general and in relation to bonsai.

Europese Larix bedraad - European Larch wired

Europese Larix - Larix decidua

Vandaag de oude bedrading volledig verwijderd en vervangen door niewe draad. Her en der takjes weggenomen om de windgestriemde stijl verder te benaderen. In de toekomst moet het misschien nog wat spaarzamer. Sommige takken moeten ook nog langer gaan uitwaaieren om er nog wat meer assymetrie in te steken. Eén grote en nog wat kleinere jins zijn in voorbereiding zoals je ziet. Ik ben heel blij met de evolutie van dit boompje op 2 jaar tijd, dus lente kom maar op.

UPDATE 7 MARCH: I rebend the upper most twig again until it met my excpectations a little better. Worked on the new jins a bit and will let them weather for some time.

Today I remove all of the old wiring and replaced it with new wires. Some branches and branchlets have been removed to further emphasise the windswept style. In the future the branches will probably need to be selected even more. A few branches need further extensioning to have some more assymetry and windswept character. Several extra jins have been created by pruning, they need finishing off in the coming period. I am quite happy with the development of this little tree over the past 2 year, I'm longing for springtime.

English oak / Quercus Robur planted back out

Mijn zomereikje, opgekweekt vanaf eikeltje in 1997, heb ik na 3tal jaar in pot terug naar de vollegrond gebracht. Tweetal seizoenen terug heb ik het boompje op stam ingekort en de bestaande vertakking helemaal weggehaald. Is terug een startplant in wording. Tot binnen een paar jaar !

My english oak, from an acorn back in 1997. After 3 years in pot I decided to plant it back out in my garden, in the same spot it was before it was in bonsaipot. Two years ago I cut back the trunk and pruned all of the existing branches away. Back to basics. See you in a few years..

Zwarte Els 2 verplant - Common Alder #2 dug out

Zwarte Els 2, eveneens van 2jr oud bosplantsoen in 2010. Sindsdien in vollegrond, zelfde onderhoud als mijn andere Els. Ook deze krijgt nog enkele jaren in vollegrond, Geduld is nodig als je een wat dikkere stam wil én tegelijk geen al te grote snoeiwonden. In dat geval duurt het opkweken wel dubbel zo lang in vollegrond, want je moet (zeker bij Els) ieder jaar of om de 2jaar de topgroei wel goed bijsnoeien, anders verdikt die zo snel dat je je verhoopte tapsheid onverhoopt kwijtspeelt. Al heeft een Zwarte Els in de natuur ook geen bijzonder stamverloop in diktegroei, eerder elegante ranke bomen.

Common Alder 2, equally from 2yo seedling in 2010. In the garden ever since. Ready for another couple of years. The goal is a thicker trunk AND no heavy trunk chop wounds. Any bonsai enthousiast knows this takes a lot more time, than fastgrowing fasthickining and then a huge trunk chop.

Zwarte Els 1 verplant - Common Alder bonsai #1 dug out

Vanaf bosgoed van 2jr oud, in 2010. Sindsdien in vollegrond in de tuin.
Dankbare soort, krachtige groeier, goed winterhard, produceert veel wortels, prachtige paarse knoppen met een mooie vorm schitterend in de winter. Wat grotere bladeren, maar als hij later als bonsai met veel vertakking in zijn pot zal staan, zal dat wel meevallen. Liever een inheemse prachtige boom die niet vaak als bonsai gehouden wordt, dan een 13-in-dozijn bonsai. Nog minstens 2tal jaar in vollegrond, misschien meer. Die stam moet nog dikker.

From 2yo seedling in 2010. Planted oud in the garden since then. Dug out every +/- 2 years, pruning once or twice per year at most. A lovely native species, very hardy, powerful growth, makes lots of roots, beautiful purple buds with an attractive shape...splendid sight in wintertime. Rather big leaves, but as a bonsai with lots of ramification that will will not be a really big issue. I prefer a beautiful native species thats quite rare as a bonsai, than just another 'bonsai'. At least another 2 years in the ground, maybe more. That trunk has more thickening ahead.

Common Alder #2

Common Alder, another one still in the ground (4th year). It was time for a better picture, now the leaves are almost gone and my other trees have moved to the other side of our garden. The basic shape of the trunk is allready visible, as are some of the future bases of important branches to develop from. The finished tree will be approx between 70 and 80cm in height.

Zwarte Els, één van de twee die al verst ontwikkeld zijn (relatief) in vollegrond. Het was tijd om nog eens een meer duidelijke foto te nemen, nu de bladeren zo goed als gevallen zijn en de rest van mijn boompjes naar de andere kant van de tuin verhuisd zijn. De basisvorm van de stam is al goed zichtbaar, net zoals de toekomstige takaanzetten van sommige belangrijke basistakken. Natuurlijk nog verder te ontwikkelen eens hij in trainingspot zal komen te staan. De uiteindelijke hoogte als bonsai zal zowat 70 à 80cm zijn schat ik. Eerst de stam nog een pak dikker krijgen in vollegrond.
